Berkeley, the Moonbat Municipality

by Wayne Boettcher

Tombstone, Arizona is known as the "Town That Wouldn't Die" as the townspeople kept it going long after it's heyday. And Ft Wayne, Indiana was called "The City That Saved Itself" because of resident's actions during a 1982 flood. Of course not every citizen is a city savior or town resurrecter, but that's how those communities are known. And regardless of who did what, the people who live there are proud of those names!

On the other hand, The City of Berkeley has a different reputation. In the '60's and '70's the so-called "hippie" movement flowered there and continues to this day. Based on the failed "beatnik" philosophy of the '40's and '50's, the next generation had even more problems. Plagued by drug abuse, lackadaisical philosophy, Marxism, anarchy, immorality and a profound lack of common sense, the flower children nevertheless changed America.

But their perception of just how much they had done so does not match up with reality (like most hippie perceptions.) The counter-culture started out fighting against the mainstream; now they think they are the mainstream. Part of this belief is due to being educated in intellectual ivory towers where everyone feels the same. Out in the world a liberal sees a guy with long hair and thinks, "hey, that guy agrees with me!" Maybe that was generally true in the early '60's but in today's world, fashion styles do not equal acceptance of political philosophy.

Americans for the most part have not succumbed to the ideals of ditching responsibility in favor of picking flowers. (We can have both responsibility and flowers!) And the idea that every person is good and noble has still not gained wide acceptance. Even many liberals now understand that, while most people may have the potential to be nice, there are many scoundrels in the world who will hurt others and destroy freedom if they can. Thus, institutions like the police and military are necessary to protect the American way of life - even for hippies among us.

When the City of Berkeley recently passed non-binding resolutions against the U.S. Marines (calling them unwelcome and providing a free parking space in front their recruiting office for a crudely painted anti-military Code Pink truck) they probably thought that many people in America would agree with them, exclaim in e-mails and letters how groovy they are and perhaps send them a flower. That did not occur.

Instead, pandemonium erupted as angry citizens across the country lectured the City of Berkeley's Mayor and Council members on how irresponsible and ignorant their actions were, myself included. The one Council member who adamantly opposed the anti-military resolutions, Gordon Wozniak, was mostly included in these emails. He wrote me back to say, "I apologize for the action of the remainder of the Council. As Christ said "Forgive them for they know not what they do." He also vowed to continue to fight in support of U.S. Marines against the other City Council members and the Mayor. His position was clear and unambiguous.

Mayor Bates, on the other hand, was more vague and disingenuous with his reply, which is also a press release. Although the resolutions were clearly against the Marines, he tried to claim this was "this is not about the men and women who are serving our country in our armed forces." That statement is untrue on its face. He also bragged that he is a retired U.S. Army Captain as if that would make it ok for a city's representative to deride serving Armed Forces. Then the "honorable" Mayor parroted some standard left-wing propaganda, whining, "I believed from the beginning that this was an unjust, illegal, and immoral war of choice." The latter is true in the sense that, had Iraq not chosen to invade our ally Kuwait, attack other allies Saudi Arabia, Israel and Jordan or taken other military actions against us like they did, no US-Iraq war would have occurred. But that is not what the Mayor meant.

As usual, MoveAmericaForward.org is at the forefront of defending American troops against leftist propaganda. Highlighting the fact that troops are often unable to respond to freaky "anti-war" propaganda, a poster was created showing a Marine with duct tape covering his mouth. Also, February 12th was planned as a day to rally in support of the Marines and all the troops. Patriots came from all over the country to Berkeley that day to refute the "anti-war" protesters (often known as "moonbats") of Berkeley. The troop-supporting crowd eventually totaled well over 1,000 military supporters!

The numbers were not so high early in the morning. As pro-Americans began to gather, Code Pink and World Can't Wait thugs began all sorts of agitation techniques including cursing, screaming and several instances of physical violence! One eyewitness described the daybreak scene by saying "throngs of angry protesters were boiling with rage." But when MoveAmericaForward.org representatives called the police, they were hung up on, and police on the scene for the most part ignored the violent peacenik aggression. Mayor Bates was spotted on the side of the moonbats sporting a pink watch cap.

As the morning continued, the peace advocates grew more and more violent, with a line of fuming liberals pushing wildly at the flag-waving military moms, veterans and troop supporters. Finally the police separated the two groups with the moonbats relegated to the other side of the street from the Marine Recruiting Station. But when MoveAmericaForward.org pointed out to the Berkeley police that their rally permit covered both sides of the street, they were told the permit didn't matter. Code Pink and World Can't Wait agitators (wearing orange scarves) were also allowed to roam freely through the Pro-American side, stealing flags to burn, starting fights and of course, still screaming and cursing.

One moonbat pretended to be a pro-American and asked to speak at their microphone. When he began cursing and disrespecting the troops, MoveAmericaForward.org leader Melanie Morgan took the microphone back. But then the crazed moonbat tried to grab it from her physically, so a Gold Star dad was forced to wrestle the anarchistic liar to the ground where his face impacted with the grass and dirt. Code Pink leader Medea Benjamin encouraged a group of aggressive young skateboarders who skated dangerously close to Pro-Americans. One peace-loving teenager attacked a woman with his skateboard.

In one flag stealing incident (it was about to be burned) a patriotic man took the flag back and tried to hang onto it but was attacked by a mob of teenagers. Finally under advice from a kind woman he let the flag go. Apparently World Can't Wait employed their well-known technique of raiding local high schools for shock troops, and had more than the usual number of liberal teachers actually taking their classes (no doubt without parental permission) to the event. Once there, the teachers had little or no control over the teenagers, however. Some kids were caught trying to cut MoveAmericaForward.org's sound system with a knife. (Again the police refused to intervene.) Finally when two teens attacked a College Republican, they were arrested. As the Code Pink crowd went even wilder at the police station in response to this minimal action, MoveAmericaForward.org re-organized and solidified their section so agitators could no longer penetrate their lines.

The pacifists still managed to steal another flag and light it up, however. But then they panicked at the sight of fire and threw it on a street sign where several bicycles were locked up. The bicycles caught on fire and burned, the tires popping and sizzling. When the City Council met that night, many Berkeley residents came forward to express their outrage of the City's anti-military resolutions. Also, Code Pink lackeys were given their chance to spout anti-troop opinions. In the end the City did not apologize to the Marines, and Code Pink loudly proclaimed an anti-military "victory." Yet the Pro-Americans had far outnumbered the "anti-war" folks.

Though the Berkeley resolutions are largely symbolic, what they symbolize is important. Senator Jim DeMint has introduced the "Semper Fi" act to cut off federal funding for the City of Berkeley. It too is symbolic and has little or no chance of passing. Yet it is a significant response to the City of Berkeley, and probably "freaks them out." I have written my Senators asking them to support the act. And there is a lot more we can do.

A Berkeley Boycott is rising as more and more companies sign on to say they will not do business with that city or people that live in it, which is becoming known as the Moonbat Municipality. Americans continue to write to Berkeley's representatives and let them know how the Marines are respected and loved by the rest of America. Will Code Pink and World Can't Wait be the final victors? Don't let that happen! Email Berkeley today and let them know you disapprove of their anti-Marine resolutions and lack of police protection for Pro-Americans. The Marines have got our back. Now it's time for us to stand up for them - and America!
