Pick Up The Glove

To challenge someone to a duel, the proper procedure is to slap the face of the person to be dueled with a glove or gauntlet and throw it to his or her feet in disgust. Usually this is done because the challenger feels the other is has offended them in an extreme way. The person who has been challenged has several choices:

1. Pick up the glove and hand it to the glove-slapper signifying acceptance of the duel (to emphasize enthusiastic acceptance return the glove with your own slap!)
2. Apologize and hope the other person forgives for the offense.
3. Turn and walk away, forever branded as a cowardly weakling in the eyes of all.

An interesting custom of times gone by.

In United States of America, there are many illegal aliens. Population estimates range from 12 to 20 million illegal foreigners in a country of 300 million. This underground population causes many problems such as taking jobs away from US citizens, allowing serious criminals and terrorists to pass unheeded through the illegal community and draining government resources that are available to the general public such as hospitals, schools and universities. United States citizens often object to lawless activity but a vocal minority of other citizens supports the breaking of immigration laws. Contention over illegal immigration in America is reaching a crescendo.

There are several factions in the hotly debated dispute. Most conservative, libertarian and some liberal US citizens would like current laws enforced, with heavy fines for those who employ illegal workers, a border fence and the withdrawal of US government giveaways for illegal border crossers. But a lot of people on the extreme left would like open borders with little or no restrictions. Employers of illegal aliens and the illegal workers themselves would like the situation to remain as it is but US politicians advocate a complicated and unenforceable "guest worker" program that amounts to amnesty.

The Senators, Representatives and Administration say it's not an amnesty. The people say it is. They say it's not. This goes back and forth ad infinitum, or ad nauseam to some. However, it is an amnesty because illegal aliens that broke the law will get to stay and become citizens. Previous calls by President Bush for amnesty laws have failed but a new bill has recently entered the scene.

The "immigration reform" bill (S.1348) is causing pandemonium with its complicated deals and "triggers." When it first came out, the sneaky (AKA honorable) Senators tried to slip it through quickly. But in today's modern world, the people also found out quickly. A patriotic person immediately emailed AmericanProtest.net: Where shall we begin to protest this? I recommended the beginning of all protests: Write the Senate as I was doing. As it turned out, we weren't alone.

Many Americans, fed up with unkept immigration promises by politicians, began calling, writing, faxing and emailing against the bill. Calls poured in to radio talk shows and entries were made in forums such as FreeRepublic.com where more were encouraged to write. A toll free number to reach the Senate, paid for by extremist left-wing amnesty proponents, was utilized by conservatives as well as it spread over the internet. Soon the Senate phone lines were jammed.

Here in Arizona we expected Senator McCain to be for amnesty and Senator Kyl to be against it. But Kyl actually sponsored the traitorous bill! The Tucson Border Patrol Union Local 2544 bitterly declared "Senator Kyl has sold us out" but that seems a little harsh. He did vote for more debate recently that effectively but temporarily stopped the bill. No doubt that was in response to his many calls, faxes, letters and emails. I believe Senator Kyl can change his erroneous view.

Senator McCain, on the other hand, hopefully opined to reporters that the call volume of angry constituents against the bill was dropping as it neared a vote. President Bush, when he learned of the bill's recent temporary defeat, defiantly declared "I'll see you at the signing." Other responses from insubordinate Senators to S.1348's setback show they are not daunted by America's rejection of the bill. This is a slap in the face to the people that elected them. But not just any slap.

It's a slap with a glove! And our rogue politicians have now thrown this glove of amnesty at the feet of United States citizens in a challenge. They consider our objections an offense. Instead of swords or pistols, however, this duel is to be fought with letters, calls, faxes and emails from our side and an amnesty bill that harms America's interests on the other. Even though we've already explained we wish enforcement of current laws and a fence, the politicians hope we'll just give up after a while and let amnesty become law.

It seems like our government refuses to believe us the first, second, third or fourth time we contact them. Therefore we must not let up. To pick up the glove means to continue to call and write your Senators, Representative and the President, every day if possible. In other words, don't stop repeating yourself. Whenever you get a chance, write or call again, whether you list all the logical reasons for opposing the bill or just say, "I'm against Bill S.1348." Numbers USA has a free fax service. Emails are still recommended to your own Senator, Representative or the President. Don't just take the slap, spurn the glove, give up and walk away. Don't be discouraged. Now is the time to stand against America's politicians…and stand up for America!
