School Helpers Committee

Recently an uproar occurred at Boulder High School in Boulder, Colorado. It seems the school convened a panel of somewhat questionable characters to have a graphic discussion about sex, drinking and drugs with some students. Instead of strongly advising the minors against these activities, however, the panel seemed to recommend them if done "responsibly." The school violated it's own policies by not presenting an opposing view. Parents who would have pulled their children from that "class" were apparently not warned, causing them to be quite upset.

But this is just one incident of many in the public K-12 schools. Though a lot of teachers are great people and impart much knowledge, the district mandates the curriculum, which is full of popular but unproven liberal theories such as global warming caused by man, Darwinian evolution, communistic or hedonistic lifestyles and sometimes even anti-patriotic instruction. The Christian heritage of the Founding Fathers is practically banned by unconstitutional mandate!

You might never see this when checking the school. Public school policies wouldn't necessarily reflect their actions. Time and again with government education outrages we see that the teacher wasn't allowed to show that R rated movie to first graders or ban discussion of Christianity but just did it. Recently a teacher was discovered spouting a hateful anti-American diatribe only because a student caught it on his mp3 recorder. They try to get away with what they can without being caught. How many outrageous incidents are we missing?

The schools didn't get this way overnight. I remember my own education in the 60's and '70s and how sometimes little real knowledge was taught in certain classes. Some teachers tried but with no discipline allowed they didn't always get far. Students who had good parents, exceptional teachers or figured out how to try could get through it all by focusing on studies and passing the tests. But temptations of parties and drugs and the threat of violence by bullies were always around. And the choice of mandated English literature reflected liberal mores with books like Siddhartha.

In America an education revolution is brewing. Christian parents are voting with their feet and leaving the government schools. Though they still pay taxes to propagandize other students, at least their own are safe. A home schooling Dad told me yesterday about how many people run up to him excitedly in public places to exclaim his children are polite, intelligent and well behaved. They can't understand it. But the parents aren't necessarily all geniuses. They band together to exchange ideas and curriculum. More associations are forming where home school kids meet for outdoor exercise and group field trips.

There's another place where good people band together and that's in the churches of America. Many are already helping by forming private Christian schools attached to the church. Others provide meeting places where home school parents can gather and teach similar classes to their kids. Some provide scholarships so people of lesser means can still go to a Christian School. These are all great things that some churches do. But more churches must help.

Churches are not like some big government entity where you can demand action as a taxpayer and a worker is assigned. Usually if you make a suggestion the Pastor will say "good idea, why don't you take care of that?" He's already a busy do-gooder, visiting the sick, counseling and helping others. And that's what I'm saying: Why don't you take care of that? Which of those three things I mentioned is your church doing? If it's none, why not check and see what you can do about it?

The increasing population of retired baby boomers is ready to be tapped. After talking it over with your Pastor, why not form a committee of retired church members and see about establishing a school attached to your church? Think of how nice it would be to see children freed from the oppression of "progressive" public schools! Perhaps a building could be added. Then hire teachers. Check with other churches that have schools. They'll probably be glad to give you some information and a tour!

If that's a little too much to take on, the "School Helper" committee could focus on making space in the church available for home school parents. They'll need some big lockable cabinets to put all their stuff in and a big room with tables and chairs. See about raising funds from other church members to help with curriculum, computers and a small library. Check with the Pastor about what church equipment can be used to assist them, like projectors, whiteboards, or vans for field trips. Find local home school associations and contact them. Ask them what they need.

But perhaps that's a little much, too. If your committee is even smaller or the church unable to fulfill that role, you can still raise funds for scholarships! A scholarship to a Christian school would sure help some of the less financially enabled in the congregation. The "School Helper" committee can raise funds in any number of ways and decide with the Pastor how to place the money in a trust or account and grant the scholarships. If a church could manage only one scholarship that would be something!

A "School Helper" committee won't be formed by itself, though. It's up to you and the Lord. The first step is to bring it to Him in prayer. Then talk to the Pastor of your church who will probably share the idea with the board of deacons or elders. After you get their approval you can start talking to the people you think will join the committee, creating a sign up sheet and scheduling a meeting. Then it's on to more prayer as you all formulate a plan of action! With the Lord on your side, who knows what will happen?

The education system in America has fallen far from what it once was. There are a lot of reasons for that, and not enough space in this column to go explore it all. And there are some parents who actually want that kind of "school of liberalism" for their kids! Let them have it. It's the American way to say "Hey, I'll take care of this problem myself!" So let's do it. It's to stand up for the children of America!
