Declaration of Troop Support

In 1776 Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence after a committee of Founders chose him for that purpose. Later others chipped in with suggestions and redactions. Breaking off from England, the fledgling United States of America patriots discarded the popular government of royalty with its kings, dukes and barons. Instead they held that certain inalienable rights are endowed by our Creator to everybody and as such cannot be infringed upon by anyone. A popular statement to British tax collectors by the rebellious Americans during the period was "we have no king but Jesus."

All this was on my mind July 4th, 2007 in the early morning as I drove through the blazing hot town of Tucson, Arizona on my way to the Military Recruiting Center at 2302 E. Speedway Blvd. For some time now liberals have picketed local US Military offices with a bizarre collection of cardboard flag draped coffins, death count signs, UN or desecrated American flags and banners requesting the US "bring the troops home." Besides coffins and death counts, false accusations of atrocities belie claims of "troop support" by dedicated left wing protesters. Yet all protesters are not alike.

While some protesting "moonbats" truly wish peace in the world but don't understand how the US Military provides it, others have a different agenda. Some are lonely and wish to bond with an accepting group. Others are conspiracy addicts who believe in nefarious plots by high-ranking government officials. Still others are Communists who wish to replace our current government with a Soviet or Maoist model. They usually take a leadership role in the "movement," counting on the ignorance of their peace-loving followers to hide how many people were killed by Marxist regimes in the 20th Century. Though many of the more moderate liberals don't like to admit it, the Democrat party in it's current form will continue sliding left until a similarly deadly Marxist state is reached.

The day was already bright as I reached the corner of Speedway and Wilson at 7:00 am, honking along with many passersby as I pulled in to the gathering of patriotic people that takes place on Wednesday mornings. Started by a lone military mom to counter protesters several years ago, the weekly troop support rally grew until it reached 20-30 people every week. Meanwhile, the protester numbers have been quite reduced from their original 30-40. Today there were only 5 steady protesters, one who refuses to take her medicine so she can "go crazy," two with a Veterans for Peace banner, one "9/11 Truther" and "Semper Fraud," who calls himself an ex-Marine. On the side of America were about 20 flag-waving patriots.

The car and truck drivers were especially loud with their honks today; horns and air horns blared with wild abandon to support the troops. Music filled the air with stirring renditions of military and patriotic songs from a loudspeaker. A row of American flags lined the area, and some cars were also festooned with banners and flags. Happiness filled the air as we all celebrated America's birthday. I unlimbered my signs and took my place with the others, happy to be in the USA where freedom abounds.

After talking with some old friends I met Harry, a World War II Marine Vet with a keen knowledge of history and politics. He explained how he had recently questioned the "Veterans for Peace" banner holding lady who told him she was an Army veteran but didn't know what an MOS was. (MOS stands for Military Occupational Specialty, basically it's a military job title system which uses numbers.) That was strange because a few months earlier I had heard she was an Air Force veteran who didn't like to talk about her service. Perhaps it was two different ladies but usually it's just the one who has that banner.

Harry is a regular guy who doesn't talk down to people though he obviously knows more than most about many subjects. I was able to add some facts to his knowledge about protest leaders in Tucson. In the Spring the big anti-war protest is usually organized by Communist Party USA while in the Fall Revolutionary Communist Party takes the lead. In between each group have smaller events, protests and meetings going on here and there, supported by "fellow traveler" groups such as Code Pink and United for Peace and Justice.

I also met Lance Corporal Joey Felix, a polite, intelligent serving Marine on leave who got along famously with Harry. They were soon deep in conversation about Marine history and events. Lance Corporal Felix later explained to me that when serving troops hear about support rallies while overseas it touches their hearts and encourages them. This encouraged me! Felix impressed me as a leader who cares about the men he serves with and I imagine he will be promoted often.

As the morning wore on some of us went across the street to be catch the traffic before it got to the moonbats there. "Bin Ladin Loves Lefties" and "Say No To Communism" were two "counter-signs" used that day. On the other side of "Say No To Communism" I have "Don't Believe Left - Wing Propaganda and Lies." These two signs have been highly effective in countering many "anti-war" protests and events. At another protest where I carried that sign one leftist argued "Communism has nothing to do with it" while the Arizona Party Secretary for CPUSA was simultaneously ordering the march to begin behind him!

I am not able to be at this troop support event every Wednesday because I am usually working. However, it's important for all of us as Americans to do what we can, when we can to support our brave men and women of the Armed Forces. Is there a weekly troop support event near you? If not, why don't you start one? Get together with some friends and pick a weekly time. A good location is a military base entrance or recruiting center. Get some flags and signs and get out there! You may see some "anti-war" folks but don't be mad. Be better looking by having higher quality signs and messages. Soon others who wish to stand up for the troops and America will join you. Don't wait for a convenient moment. The time is now!
